MAMACHA CARMEN PAUCARTAMBO - CUSCO - PERÚ

The festival in honor of Mamacha Carmen is celebrated every year from July 15 to 18 in the town of Paucartambo located in the Department of Cusco, in the heart of the southern Andean region. The Virgin of Carmen is a symbolic representation of the social memory of the town and its celebration is a cult, a mixture of hierarchies, religiosity, legends and myths that feed tradition and nourish links that go back centuries. The devotion to the Virgin of Carmen brings together neighbors and relatives for four days in different groups or troupes, each with their own costumes, decorations, music and dances that give life to a celebration full of devotion, solidarity and reciprocity, thus affirming their identity and pride towards it. Through dances, historical events are narrated and through theatrical collective games such as “qonoy”, “forest” or “guerrilla” they involve visitors, curious people and tourists from many corners of Peru.
