The mystery about longevity in Vilcabamba in southern Ecuador remains latent to this day. Already in the 70s, scientific research began to determine what factors would be the cause of said longevity. More recent studies point to a combination of elements within the game. From the mild climate with annual temperatures between 18-23 Cº, the altitude of 1700 meters above sea level, the quality of its waters, the lack of stress, low fat diets, the cultivation of food in an organic way and of course genetics.
In Vilcabamba you can see centenarian people doing farm work in a traditional way as they did throughout their lives. The last revision of the population census in the Valle de los Longevos (year 2020) highlighted the existence of 57 individuals who exceeded the century among a population of 7000 inhabitants.
