Every january 20th a brutal confrontation among the youth of the different communities of Canas Province in southern Cusco department is enacted.
The battle takes place at an altitude of 4500 meters in the Chiaraje Pampa. The weapons and munitions are mostly slings or “guaracas” and stones. In just a few minutes, a serene and bucolic view is transformed into a wild scene, where there are no rules or limits, and to which even death can come in their fanatical push to conquer maximum land and make the enemy retreat. With this act not only do the victors rejoice in the pride of the win, but also the harvests are assured to be abundant and fertile for the whole community, including the defeated ones. The blood shed during the fight will serve as offerings in tribute to the Pachamama.
